Usare idiomi di registro alto come bite the bullet, weather the storm, throw in the towel
Usare fixed expressions tipiche dello scritto formale (in the wake of, by and large, for the time being)
Usare idiomi con preposizioni che esprimono causa e dipendenza (hinge on, stem from, account for)

to weather the storm — superare un periodo di difficoltà.
to throw in the towel — arrendersi, rinunciare.
against all odds — contro ogni previsione, nonostante le probabilità sfavorevoli.

The company had to bite the bullet and lay off a third of its staff.
Against all odds, the smaller firm weathered the storm and came out stronger.

bite the bullet /baɪt ðə ˈbʊlɪt/rassegnarsi ad affrontare
throw in the towel /θrəʊ ɪn ðə ˈtaʊəl/gettare la spugna
against all odds /əˈɡeɪnst ɔːl ɒdz/contro ogni previsione
💡 Nota che quasi tutti questi idiomi vengono da campi concreti — il pugilato (throw in the towel), il mare (weather the storm), le scommesse (against all odds) — poi trasferiti a qualsiasi situazione difficile. Capire l'immagine originale aiuta a ricordarli.

🔑 Cinque Fixed Expressions

in the wake of — in seguito a, sulla scia di.
by and large — nel complesso, in generale.
for the time being — per il momento.
as things stand — allo stato attuale.
with a view to (+ gerundio) — con l'intento di.

In the wake of the scandal, the minister resigned within days.
By and large, the reforms have been well received.

as things stand /əz θɪŋz stænd/allo stato attuale
with a view to /wɪð ə vjuː tuː/con l'intento di
⚠️ With a view to è sempre seguito dal gerundio, mai dall'infinito: with a view to expanding, non with a view to expand.

🔑 Hinge On / Stem From / Account For / Fall Back On / Bank On

to hinge on — dipendere interamente da (come un cardine).
to stem from — derivare da, avere origine da.
to account for — spiegare, giustificare, rendere conto di.
to fall back on — ricorrere a come soluzione di riserva.
to bank on — contare su, fare affidamento su.

The whole negotiation hinges on tomorrow's vote.
Her reluctance stems from a bad experience years ago.

hinge on /hɪndʒ ɒn/dipendere interamente da
stem from /stem frɒm/derivare da
account for /əˈkaʊnt fɔː/spiegare, giustificare
fall back on /fɔːl bæk ɒn/ricorrere a (soluzione di riserva)
bank on /bæŋk ɒn/contare su
💡 Account for ha due usi distinti: spiegare la causa di qualcosa (this accounts for the delay) oppure rappresentare una quota (exports account for 40% of revenue).

Original: She found it hard to accept her father's decision.
TERMSShe found it hard to come to terms with her father's decision.
Qui "TERMS" innesca l'idioma come to terms with, che significa proprio "accettare qualcosa di difficile".
